The Project Evolved...Into Something Else

Who knows if anyone even looks at this blog anymore.  While I stopped updating it a long time ago, I never stopped working on the game.  Well...technically, I did stop working on it.  It evolved into a whole new game.

The new game is called "Mages & Mercenaries: The Curse of Eternal Darkness."  It has a turn-based combat engine similar to the Gold-Box games.  I won't say much else about it, but I will upload some images...

To be fair, your last update here was back in 2016, so many people (myself included) might've thought that the project was dead/discontinued etc.

Having said that, I do love what I'm seeing and can't wait for the game to come out! Any plans to release M&M:CoED on GoG/Steam etc? Or even doing a Kickstarter?

  2. Truth is, work never stopped on the game. I just started posting on forums where I could get immediate feedback (places like RPG Codex and RPG Watch). After a while, I just stopped updating the blog. It occurred to me, though, that I should really update it in case anyone ever stops by to check it out.

I'll probably drop some updates in the future for those that might want to know how things are going.

And yes, the intention is for it to be on GOG and/or Steam at some point. I don't think I'll need to do a Kickstarter, since it's really just a one-man operation. About the only thing I'd use the money for is to update the graphics somewhat (better walls, for example).

  3. While this might not be the most important aspect of a CRPG, it looks good! Old school, to the point, but clean and refined. I also like what's implied by the screenshots (encounter dialogs with options, skill checks?). Can you tell us more about combat? Looks tactical but what can characters do?

  4. For your wall textures and overall art, you might not need more money after all ;) . You should take a look at Stable Diffusion especially if you have a capable Nvidia GPU with 8 GB VRAM (like a 1070) which would allow you to run it locally, for instance with this GUI which sets up everything for you: https://nmkd.itch.io/t2i-gui (warning, can generated NSFW content depending on your prompt).

It's an amazing AI-powered source of original legal art for indie devs. It's not great at everything, but for portraits and wall textures it would be an amazing help especially if you run the output through a pixellizing filter. This search engine is great to get an idea of the possibilities and get prompt examples: https://lexica.art/

  7. I've started playing Pool of Radiance recently and now the inspiration for your game is very obvious. I've been very impressed with what the Gold Box design does, and can only imagine what some modern thinking might it to (quality of life for the UI and perhaps even more depth to its adventures).
If you're still working on this, know that there's an audience for it and an update would be appreciated!
